Karlie Carter Wins Cat 3 Crit at Sunny King

Karlie Ann Carter describes her winning move at the Sunny King Crit in the Women’s 3/4 race on Saturday. Last lap video below

“I always try to stay up at the front of the pack and the girls this year made that a little difficult. They were good at defending their position. I even remember coming around one corner earlier in the race and my dad telling me to move up, even though I already knew I needed to, and I came around the next time and shook my head at him because it was difficult to get the position I wanted! At one point two girls got off the front, and one of them I knew and had raced with before so I knew she was strong. So I bridged up to them and said to myself “you just lost the race right there because you burned a lot of matches getting back up to them”. On the last lap I ended up second wheel and knew I’d like to be back one or two more spots but I wasn’t willing to get out of the pack and risk losing a decent position. So again I was thinking I had lost the race because my dad has told me before that the 3rd and 4th person normally will win the races more often than positions 1 and 2. When we came around the final corner I was trying to be patient and wait because I have such a short sprint. This girl beside me jumped up on the pedals like she was about to go so I got on her wheel. However she wasn’t going as fast as I was expecting and I didn’t want to slow down just to get behind her and have to re-accelerate again so I just went for it! I felt like I went too soon but somehow it worked out for me”
