Alabama Wheelmen (AW) will continue its mission in 2018 to promote the sport of cycling at all levels by recruiting riders to participate on AW race teams. Riders range from novice to expert. There are no membership fees, and membership is open to everyone. However, in order to participate as a racer, riders will need to purchase a race license from USA Cycling, Inc, and also the AW kit. The purchase or renewal of licenses for 2018 is available as of 12/1/2017. Kits are ordered from Hincapie several times a year. The next order should occur in Feb. 2018, for delivery by early April. For those who wish to become or remain members of AW, a membership form must be submitted, signed by either the member or, for minors, the parent or legal guardian of the member. Members can earn incentive points based on participation, per the scheme detailed in the AW bylaws, which are available on the website. The form can be downloaded as a PDF as shown below. The form includes directions for submitting. All members will receive regular updates from the AW secretary via email. These updates will include information on training sessions and meetings, as well as plans for participating in races for 2018. The incentive points will be accrued based on posted race results from usacycling.org. There will be emphasis races designated by the AW board at which maximum team participation will be encouraged. The first of these will be the Sunny King Criterium and Piedmont Road Race, held in or near Anniston, AL, the weekend of April 7-8, 2018. We will also hold the Alabama Wheelmen Race Weekend, tentatively Aug. 11-12, 2018, in Huntsville, AL.
