Alabama Wheelmen (https://www.facebook.com/alabamawheelmen/) will be holding a race weekend Aug. 12-13 and registration is now open at USA Cycling. This will be safe and fun for all levels of cyclists. Our host hotel is located in a prime spot for Saturdays and Sundays events and have blocked out rooms with a special rate. The Springhill Suites Downtown Huntsville (click link for booking info or call 256-713-1143 and mention the Alabama Wheelmen Race Weekend discount) will host packet pickup on Friday August 11th from 4-8 PM, day of packet pickup will be available on site of the events. This Marriott Hotel is only 2 miles from our Social on Saturday night and 1 mile from the Downtown Crit Race the following Sunday morning.
The 1st event will be a circuit time trial starting at the Boeing ball fields, located on the south side of the Huntsville airport, on Saturday morning. This will be an all right turn course on great pavement area that is sure to lead to some fast avg speeds. – The Smart GMP Solutions Time Trial!
Starting later that morning and running throughout the afternoon, we will hold criteriums for all categories at Jemison High School on their greenpower race track that circles the campus of the high school. This is a purpose built course that encircles the Jemison High School campus. Its designed for student driven electric cars and the course is almost 1 mile long. The Huntsville Hospital Crit!
Following the Saturday criterium we will gather at Campus No. 805 that is home to Yellowhammer Brewery and Straight To Ale Brewery and enjoy the evening with a bikes and brews event and social. H.U.B.S. Bike share will be available for a bikes and brews tour around downtown Huntsville starting around 5 PM and going till 10 at various breweries around town. That event can be found here. The bikes are located inside Straight To Ale should you choose to leave your race bike at home and the ride will leave from there- email email@example.com for reservations. This brewery also houses some of the best wood fired pizza in the country and is Huntsville’s premier local, craft brewery center and event venue located at 2620 Clinton Ave W.)
Then on Sunday we will be in downtown Huntsville all day for a 2nd criterium on the traditional course with streets closed off to traffic. This will be a more technical course with 5 right turns and one tight left. The Banner Defense Downtown Crit Course. All net proceeds from the race will go to Tennessee Valley Family Services, which is a 501(c)3 that provides housing to troubled youth, in particular those who are victims of Human Trafficking. https://www.safeharboryouth.org/
