The Alabama Wheelmen is the original bicycle racing club for the state. The club was formed to promote amateur racing and was originally affiliated with the Amateur Bicycle League of America, an organization formed in the 1920’s that was renamed as the United States Cycling Federation in 1975. The Alabama Wheelmen operated under the name “Alabama Wheelmen Velosport” during the 1990’s, under the leadership of Lee Walls, who operated what was effectively a semi-pro team. The “AWV” shut down in 1999 by Walls, but 10 years later, the club found new life through the efforts of a group of dedicated cyclists in Huntsville. This group is committed to promoting healthy lifestyles and fair competition by organizing events, education programs, and rider development, accepting riders at all levels to help them develop their full potential.
