2018 ALABAMA WHEELMEN TRAINING CAMP

Hello Everyone,
Welcome to the Alabama Wheelmen Cycling Camp! We are very excited to put this camp together with the goal of bringing the team together on the bike before the racing season starts. This document will outline the camp details, and provide additional information for you to have before departing for the
camp.

Check-In Details
Check-in will start at 5 PM. You will be able to unpack, socialize and grab some food provided to us that
evening. I will do an overview of the camp itinerary, and answer any questions at 8:00 PM

Check-out is on Monday, so we will be able to grab breakfast, and riders can then do a course preview of
the Foothills RR in Piedmont before heading home.

Housing Information
Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center
1314 Shocco Springs Road Talladega, Alabama 35160
We are staying in the Adventure Camp section of the property in the Bethea Duplex.

The lodge does not provide your towels and linens so you will want to pack your own(twin sheets, pillow and towel), unless you
notified Clint that you would like to pay the fee for the items the camp provides.
We know many of you will still want to be in touch with the outside world, but we have been told that
WiFi is not really available on the property.

Weather Outlook
The weather outlook looks ok for now, but we will have a better understanding as we are closer to the
event. Temps will range from 30’s in the mornings to the 50’s in certain spots. The best advice on
clothing is to come prepared with layers such as: arm warmers, vest, lightweight riding jacket, knee and
leg warmers, gloves, etc. Layering helps you to stay warm, but not overheat as the temps rise. You also
may find the efforts on the climbs dictate the need to pull layers on and off to stay comfortable.
There is a chance of rain in the forecast, so you may want to have a rain jacket with you. We will try to
avoid the rain, and will restructure things if needed to ride in the most optimal conditions.
Coaching Presentation Sessions
These sessions will go over a variety of topics in regards to training methods, weight training, and racing.
If we have time, we will even be able to teach Dwight Thompson how to do a wheelie when coming
across the finish line solo. You should leave this camp with many questions answered, so please make
sure you get these answers by asking the questions.

Maps that have been created for those of you who still run Garmin devices and not a Wahoo 😊  There will be a ride for those of you who want to come down a bit early and get some flat miles in your legs before we start ripping the muscles from the bones on Cheaha.  This ride will be weather dependent if it rains or not.  It will be 50 ish miles on the Chief Ladiga trail from Jacksonville State Parking lot location.  Address that will get you close to the trail head is – 735 Park Ave NW #401, Jacksonville, AL 36265  This is the address for Park Place Apartments that are very close to the trail head.  I will make a facebook event for this ride on the Wheelmen Page FYI, but please let me know if you plan on doing the Friday ride.  We will probably start the ride around 11 and pedal for a while easy to get the legs active and woke up.

Clint got into cycling to lose weight and get fit. He is currently at Cat 4 Racer and the Chief Race Director for the Alabama Wheelmen. When not on his bike he spends time with his two young boys and beautiful wife.

Great to hear. We will probablly do another order around Feb/March of 18 as we get ramped up for the 2018 racing season. We have multiple training rides planned for the winter. Best bet is to keep a watch on our facebook page for updates. The link for the pages can be found here at the top of the page
